EXP: ECHO CURVE

What are we looking for?

We invite emerging artists up to 30 years of age, from Novi Sad (Serbia), Zagreb (Croatia), and Skopje (North Macedonia) to explore and open up discussions on the potential of artistic practice as a relevant modus of communication in contemporary society. The artists will be selected based on their portfolio, motivation, and a proposed idea on the concept of the Echo Curve theme.

What is the idea behind the ECHO CURVE project?

In the context of physics, and precisely when measuring radar level meters, the "echo curve" is a graphical representation of the signal received by the radar antenna as it interacts with the surface of the measured medium. When translated into what it can mean to young artists trying to connect and find a way to address the signals received from their immediate surroundings and the world at large, it is a specific and very abstract proposition. So, how do young artists measure the world and convey messages through their art? How do they interact both among themselves and with the audience? How do they utilize feedback to further shape their artistic practices? We aim to initiate these questions through the regional open call, inviting artists from Novi Sad, Zagreb, and Skopje to explore and open up discussions on the potential of communication in art through their works.

What are the planned activities?
The project activities will take place from May to November 2024, including online meetings with a mentor and curators, as well as two professional visits to Zagreb and Skopje, during which ideas are expected to develop from concept to realization for the final event (an exhibition) in Novi Sad (in the fall of 2024).

What do we encourage?
We encourage applications that involve a research-oriented approach in the artistic process, new media practices, experimentation, audio-visual works, installations, performances, and similar forms. The works must be collapsible and easily portable for transport to Novi Sad, where the exhibition will occur.

What do we offer?
All travel and accommodation expenses, as well as a fee for the participants, are provided. This opportunity offers participants the chance to develop new artwork, benefit from both group and
one-on-one mentoring, as well as to receive valuable critical feedback. Collaborating closely with an internationally established curator, participants will ultimately showcase their creations in a group exhibition set to take place in Novi Sad in the fall of 2024.

Who is behind the project?
The regional project "ECHO CURVE" is implemented through a collaboration of three organizations - the Association of Artists "Project EXP" from Novi Sad, Serbia; the Association for Artistic Research and Curatorial Practices "Press to Exit Project Space" from Skopje, North Macedonia; and Autonomous cultural center "Attack" from Zagreb, Croatia. The project is financially supported by the Government of Switzerland, within the project "Culture for Democracy", implemented by the Heartefact Foundation.
